I’m excited to bring you the second update of the year for Myo-Hand XP! Version 1.6 is our biggest single update since we started building Myo-Hand XP. It brings with it some of the most desired features you’ve asked for along with some key changes in preparation for future releases.
Some of the new features and changes will require a refresh of your training to help you be ready to make the most of these. We’ll reach out to you to organise a time to do a training update session and push the v1.6 update to your devices.

Added support for two new sensors |
|
|
|
|
This is probably the most wanted feature, support for the compact electrodes used in dual site control and the COAPT pattern recognition system. We are excited to bring these two to Myo-Hand XP in v1.6. |
|

|
Besides the software updates, we created a mechanical adapter to connect these sensors to a custom strap or a check socket. We are adding these adapters to all our hardware kits along with a pre-made strap. |
|

Added manual wrist rotation using the headset controller |
|
|
|
It is now possible to manually adjust the prosthetic hand rotation without needing to train the pronation and supination patterns in all sensors. This is possible by using the off-hand headset controller joystick. |
|

|
|
|
|
|
To adjust the wrist rotation, grab the extra controller, press the trigger and grip buttons, and use the joystick’s left-right direction to rotate the wrist. |

|
Added the “Diary” for subjective questionnaires |
|
|
|
|
We created a “Diary” to collect subjective questionnaires from users. The Diary can be accessed from the Home and Game menus. It initially includes questionnaires for emotion, phantom pain, positive phantom sensations and negative phantom sensations. |
|
|
|
|
|
|
The data is currently stored in the headset’s default user but in the future it will be stored in each user’s profile.

Changed the look of the UI and some behaviours |
|
|
|
You may have noticed that the UI is missing the background screen and looks like it is floating. We did this to adopt what is becoming standard for user interfaces in virtual reality and be consistent with the UI of our upcoming VR intervention for lower limb. |
|
|
|
|
|
|
|
We also changed the behaviour of the game start and confirmation buttons from press to hold to avoid accidental environment transitions. This means that to confirm game selections you’ll need to hold the button for a second and let go of it to launch a game. |
|

|
Added the ability to return the Paintgun in Paintball Town |
|
|
|
|
We did this to make it easier to quit Paintball Town mid-game and avoid confusion at the end of the game. You are now able to return the Paintgun to its case at any point in the game, so that you can easily interact with the in-game UI.

|
|
|
|
At the end of the game, the Paintgun is no longer automatically returned, which means you need to manually return it to the case. This is to avoid confusion from the Paintgun suddenly dropping or disappearing. |

|
|
Improved virtual object stability when grasping |
|
|
|
Game engine physics can be a bit wonky sometimes! So we have made improvements to the interactions between the prosthetic hand and the objects. There should be fewer occurrences of the objects bouncing around or flying off into the infinite. |
|
|
|
|
|
|
|
Best practice is still to avoid “pressing down” on the objects to avoid flying objects, but from our testing even this has improved. Please still keep us posted when weird physics happens so we can look into it and keep making it more stable. |
|

|
|
Background changes are changes that you may not see but are important. |
|
|
|
Added encryption of personal user information
|
|
|
As we prepare to roll out user profiles, we decided to introduce encryption of personal information. This means that data such as user’s names will appear as random letters in our databases and only be readable on the companion app or in Myo-Hand XP.
We take cybersecurity seriously, so this is a key step for us to ensure our user’s information is always protected even in the case of a database leak. |

Added engagement data, game score history, and top scores to our data gathering |
|
|
Along with user profiles, we are now able to link up play data to specific users. This opens the door to keep a history of user’s play sessions, their scores, and progress over time. It also allows for the top scores of that user to be calculated or even the whole clinic’s!
The background work is all done to enable this, so we have rolled it out so we can continue validating it and make sure it is all ready to go once the user profiles are enabled. |
